On February 4, 2023, Acharya Institute of Technology performed the play Maa Nishada at the Sourabha 2023 event. Directed by Tejas K and Puneeth, and written by the celebrated playwright Dr. Girish Karnad, the play is a profound exploration of themes from the Ramayana, but with a modern, critical lens.
Maa Nishada centers around Lord Rama and reexamines his decisions, particularly his treatment of Sita, after their return to Ayodhya following the defeat of Ravana. The title references the famous verse uttered by the sage Valmiki, and the play serves as a meditation on the themes of righteousness and moral dilemmas. It questions the consequences of Rama's rigid adherence to societal norms, especially in the abandonment of Sita, exploring the tensions between duty and personal relationships.
Karnad’s interpretation sheds light on gender dynamics, power structures, and the complexities of leadership, leaving the audience to ponder the costs of adhering strictly to societal expectations at the expense of personal justice and compassion. This play is a thought-provoking commentary on myth, morality, and the fallibility of heroes.
