On February 6, 2023, Christ (Deemed University) presented the play Sati at the Sourabha 2023 State Level Inter-College Theatre Competition, under the direction of Prasanth Shetty and written by renowned Kannada playwright H. S. Shivaprakash. The play tackles the controversial and oppressive practice of Sati, where widows were expected to immolate themselves on their husbands' funeral pyres. Through Shivaprakash’s powerful narrative, the play explores the emotional, societal, and ethical dimensions of this ancient tradition, shedding light on how women were trapped in the name of honor and duty.

The storyline of Sati dives into the human experience behind the practice, examining the pressures that women faced, and critiques the socio-religious structures that enforced such inhumane acts. With a modern lens, the play challenges the traditional gender roles and critiques the patriarchal system that allowed such a practice to exist. The production was a bold and reflective piece in the competition, drawing attention to the need for social reforms and women’s empowerment, while also questioning the value systems of the past.
